Botanical Garden

Gives the name to the neighborhood (Jardim Botânico) where it is situated. It is an oasis in the middle of the noisy and crowded city. It’s the only place in Rio where you can find over 8000 different plant and vegetables species (a few in a way to extinction) like pau-brasil – tree symbol of the country which was extracted by the Portuguese with great value in the XVI century and gave us the name Brazil.

The Garden it’s in the history of the city among with different constructions dated the beginning of the XIX century when the royal Portuguese family came to to escape Napoleon’s French invasion.

Inaugurated by D. João VI (King of Portugal) in 1808 as a garden to preserve rare plants and spices from Asia with great commercial value, it starts to receive plants from different parts of the globe as a gift to the king making its enormous variety.

Kings, presidents, celebrities and scientists from all over the world visited the Botanical Garden through time but the most important one was Albert Einstein on March of 1925. He holds and kissed a “jequitibá” when informed its value to the country’s economy.
